These immigrants were very poor and in order for them to put food on their table, they grew cabbages on their front lawns. And, this is how the neighbourhood became known as "Cabbagetown".Cabbagetown's residents come from all walks of life with wide variety of backgrounds. There is a strong sense of community that is evident with an annual Cabbagetown Fall Festival in September which feature community yard sales, historical walking tours, parade and more. Local residents form the Cabbagetown Preservation Association to ensure that all renovations and new developments in Cabbagetown are in keeping with this historical neighbourhood.Shopping district on Parliament Street has many unique shops and restaurants.
